point is overwhelming, that he lied about serving in a combat zone. >> walz retired from the national guard in 2005, two months before his unit was deployed to iraq. he then ran for congress, where he was a vocal critic of the bush administration's war policies, the harris campaign, saying governor walz would never insult or undermine any american service to this country. during the primary in michigan, president biden faced a wave of uncommitted votes for his response to the war in gaza. leaders of that movement tell abc news they briefly spoke with harris yesterday, saying they want her to consider a weapons embargo on israel. the harris campaign says the vice president has prioritized engaging with arab, muslim and palestinian community members about the war in gaza, adding she will always work to ensure israel is able to defend itself. harris, facing pro-palestinian protesters at her rally in michigan. you know what? >> if you want donald trump to win, then say that. otherwise, i'm speaking.

>> former president trump says a new debate with harris will be announced soon, but he did not say more than that. it comes after trump backed out of a debate in september on abc. perry russom abc news washingto. >> vice president harris will be attending a fundraiser in san francisco on sunday. the entry to that event ranges from 3300 to $500,000. you can find all of our election coverage heading into november right now at abc seven news.com, and wherever you stream abc seven news. >> the newest effort to revitalize downtown san francisco officially underway, bricks and embarcadero plaza is bringing free events to the plaza multiple days per week. it started yesterday with a business mixer. this afternoon. there's trivia. tomorrow. it's a happy hour, including a dj. organizers say the goal is to bring people back to the area on a daily basis. >> when we talk to people, what they said was just doing an event or a big concert once is not really going to revitalize downtown. what we need is

5:40 am

something happening every day. >> well, start off slow and build it up, brick said. embarcadero plaza is set to run through october, with events happening wednesday through saturday. there are also activations continuing in other parts of downtown, including a bi monthly night market. >> bird watchers are flocking to a park in san francisco hoping to catch a glimpse of this bird or take a photo of it. it's never seen been seen before in california. enthusiasts and photographers are getting up early in the morning looking for a slate throated redstart at pine lake park that's near stern grove. now, this rare bird is found in primarily mexico and central america, and abc seven spoke with a couple of lucky bird watchers who happened to capture photos. >> i'm so sorry to say this, but we were here for, like five minutes. we were really lucky. i don't know, i just had this feeling because the sun was out and it was still pretty early

5:41 am

and there weren't a lot of people, especially you know, the people tell me in the first time in california, you know, they just everybody like it. >> very high iso you know, marie, if you're blessed, you're blessed. embrace it. experts aren't sure how the bird even got to pine lake. the sighting has received national attention after being featured on the american birding association's podcast. >> thank you. >> downtown san francisco's storied history is a subject of a new interactive exhibit, inside the flood building at powell and market streets. digital displays, as you can see here, show snapshots of the downtown area during the 50s, 60s and 70s. that was when downtown was going downtown, i should say, was a special event for people. some of the photographs on display haven't been seen in nearly 50 years. this public art project will be up through mid october. >> very cool here at 541 i do

have a traffic update for you. >> metering lights have just been flipped on. you're taking a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza. now you can see the rightmost and leftmost lanes all backed up past the parking lot. at this point, if you are reliant on the bay bridge, know that you will hit a slow down just as you're approaching treasure island. earlier this morning, there was a crash that was blocking the two middle lanes after treasure island, and people are still seeing some residual delays because of that. things will open up for you though, at fremont street as you head into the city. >> reggie, we all know weddings are expensive. we're going to show you how one bride and groom got their guests to fund the wedding. oh no, it is interesting. >> now the guests had a time. it wasn't like they just paid and set down. they had a time. >> i want to have a time that i'm not paying for. oh, drew. >> oh, that reminds me. i'll send you a venmo request, you guys. oh, okay. just skip my mind. you've been meaning to do that. when i was getting

married, i, you know, lots going on, take a look at the calendar so far this month. we do have a string of warmer than normal days. this is san jose, for example, in fact, so far this month, we have had temperatures for the most part, above average. five out of the last seven days have been warmer than average. and that just does continue. a trend of what has been a pretty warm summer season, not only here locally, but across the globe. we've seen some climate records achieved this just in this morning. july 2024 was the second hottest july on record across the entire globe. now here locally, if we zoom in to the nine counties of the bay area last month was the hottest july on record for almost all of the bay area. the lone exception was san francisco because of the marine layer keeping us on the cooler side. but this is just a long term warming trend driven by human activities, primarily the emission of greenhouse gases. now, we will likely see some changes coming. our way over the next couple of months. the reason why we're flipping from el nino to a la nina season,

5:44 am

likely in the fall, and what that means the waters off of the equatorial pacific near a south america are cooling off as we speak, so we do expect la nina this fall, and that could lead to a drop in our global average temperatures over the next couple of months. that's something we'll track for you, but just know it has been pretty warm the last couple of months across the entire globe. and here locally today, though, we do have a little bit of a cooldown coming. it's a cooler afternoon compared to yesterday. 60s along the coast, 70 around the bay

flames, while conducting evacuations during the first moments of the burrell fire last month. >> i think we need to go that way. i can't see if we can get

5:47 am

out that way. i don't think so, man. >> a us forest service officer was also trapped with them, fearing the worst and cut off from firefighters. everyone put on a nomex flame resistant jackets. they were instructed to use traffic flares to light backfires to burn a spot where they could find refuge. 40 terrifying minutes later, the three were able to meet up with a fire crew and escape. >> c so we're going to let the fire guys, okay? we're going to let the fire burn there. >> we didn't do anything. you okay? man we didn't do anything. this guy got you. you got. >> look at that relief. as for the burrell fire, it's burned 59,000 acres. it's at 84% contained this morning. >> if you've made a costco run recently, you may have noticed this big change at the front door. the chain is cracking down and trying to keep out so-called membership moochers. now you have to scan your id card or mobile app instead of just flashing it to the attendant. >> many places in the bay area have already rolled this out.

5:48 am

abc seven news reporter j.r stone gives us a first look at this new policy. >> a scan is now needed to get inside the san francisco costco. >> i'm okay with this scanning. if it as long as the machines work. >> it worked when i was in line. well, not for the woman in front of me. so i waited. then i waited some more. when this man cut in front of me. thanks, man. you're welcome. although i don't think he was thanking me, so i could see that slowing down people getting in. >> because if everybody has to scan, they're going to have to wait for the next. it's not just a flash of a card anymore. they want a scan. so it's going to take a little bit longer. >> so why the change? jay zagorsky at boston university's questrom school of business says there are two reasons. >> it sold $4.6 billion worth of memberships last year. so their whole goal is to make sure that membership is valuable, that people can't do what we call in business, free riding, that people just can't sort of sneak into the store and buy things

5:49 am

because they're not really making any money. when people buy things, they're making most of it on the membership. >> and while many shoppers have their beliefs, that's a way to get rid of to get rid of people. >> they probably just did it to reduce the number of employees they have standing at the door, zagorsky says. >> there is something to that. >> what costco would like to do is redeploy people from the input side, from walking into costco to the checkout side, a way to speed up the process of leaving the store, which can slow down when items are being checked. >> costco will only say that these new machines will be implemented at store locations across the country in the coming months. in san francisco, j.r stone, abc seven news. >> well, get ready. well, we all know weddings can be expensive. couples have to get creative to find ways to save money. but the question is, has this latest trend gone too far? because some couples are now charging their guests? let's talk about it.

5:50 am

newlyweds nova and remo sold tickets to their wedding for about $300, and claim that they brought in $70,000. they say it was kind of like buying a concert ticket. you're paying for the entertainment and the experience, but they say there was some pushback. >> i would never spend money on tickets. i don't care, what do you guys think you are? you are beyonce and jay-z. >> oh, look at those >> okay, so here's what they got you all. >> not the bus rap. >> listen, they got a seat on the couple's wedding bus that included a 12 hour day of plans and different things they were doing in new york city. that's not enough for 300 for y'all. >> no, don't. i don't want to do anything for 12 hours at a wedding. >> i feel like that's a full day of work. you pay me. >> thank you. >> i do love weddings, though. i think great. >> okay, but what you would pay? >> well, it's like, what's the

5:51 am

adventure? the adventure could be fun with your friends and family. >> so i wondered if they paid and then gave a gift. or was that the gift? oh, maybe that was the gift. >> but i'm not going to buy someone a $300 gift either. oh, i feel like i'd already. >> i had to fly to new york. i had to stay at the hotel. yeah, i've already paid thousands of dollars just to be there. >> so that's the gift. 300. >> that's the gift? >> yeah, that was the gift. maybe it's more palatable. i don't know, this is like charging someone for your birthday party. listen, i'm not fully for it, nor against it. i think i'd be less for it if it was just the wedding ceremony. but they put you in a little fun little bus, little 12 hour tour. hop on, hop off. you never know. curated, curated. it seems fun. yeah. >> and they. and it worked for them. yeah. >> 70 i politely decline and that's totally fine. but they got 200 people to do this. they got nice friends and family out there. let's see the latest on debbie this morning. it is

moving onshore once again. it made a second landfall earlier in south carolina. now that it's over land it's lost its fuel its moisture source which is the atlantic ocean. so it is going to fall apart pretty rapidly here. it's going to quickly move off to the north and east, watch what happens. it gets picked up by a cold front late tonight. and by tomorrow night it's basically in new england. so this storm is really going to pick up speed fast, but it will drop some heavy rain over parts of virginia, pennsylvania. there could be some severe weather in the mid-atlantic today as the storm system gets closer. back here at home, a live look at our rooftop camera. everything is lovely here. it's quiet. we do have fog this morning. some clouds, some drizzle. this afternoon. cooler air does arrive. then the weekend. outlook saturday is starting off mild and sunny, but sunday those temperatures do drop off. we'll go below average. so highs today. we're in the 80s and 90s in the south bay. that cooling trend gets underway here. 70s and 80s for the most part along the peninsula close to the bay shoreline along the coast, a mix

5:53 am

of sun and clouds. in the 60s, it will feel cooler today across san francisco. yesterday, we're in the 70s. we had full sunshine. it felt warm. the wind picked up in the afternoon, and now we're seeing the cooler air move in. today 60s across the board in the north bay. we're mainly in the 80s and low 90s 60s, though for our beaches, bodega bay, stinson coming in at 65, in the east bay we will find morning clouds of sun 71 oakland, 70, in berkeley, about 78. union city, 80. castro valley and inland. you start to feel that cooler air. yesterday was quite hot. today we're in the upper 80s to the mid 90s overnight. tonight we will find our fog reappearing. we'll have some coastal drizzle once again. and overnight lows are generally in the 50s as we head into friday. so here's the accuweather seven day forecast. the big headline today. it's a cooler afternoon as a cooling trend gets underway. here. we start the weekend off with lots of sunshine. sunday though, the winds pick up the temperatures drop will start to go below average and we'll actually keep that trend for monday and tuesday by wednesday it's a little warmer, but no excessive heat on the horizon next seven

they've been there seven weeks longer than they were supposed to be. nasa is considering sending a spacex dragon crew nine, which is supposed to launch to the es in september, with only two of the four astronauts assigned to it. the spacecraft would carry extra spacesuits for butch wilmore and suni sunny williams. however,

5:57 am

that plan means the pair will remain on the es until february of 2025, when the crew is set to return to earth. >> knowing butch and sunny, you know they are professional astronauts and test pilots, and they understand the difficulties of the decisions that we're faced. they have complete confidence in the ground teams and uh, and then they'll they'll do what we need them to do when they launch june 5th. >> the astronauts were only supposed to be on the es for about a week, but the starliner sustained helium leaks and propulsion problems on the first leg of its flight. >> ahead, at six teenagers letting their voices be heard, some will be able to vote in school board elections in the east bay, even if they're just 16. then the adorable cub, rescued and now trying to recover at the oakland zoo. >> take a look at the accuweather forecast. a cooling trend is underway here inland. today. we'll have sunshine temperatures in the low and mid 90s around the bay shoreline. morning clouds giving way to
